Powerman Guernsey Duathlon Report

28 March 1999
The 160 entrants in the Powerman Guernsey Duathlon saw the Island at it's best as even the sun turned out to watch the "stars" compete.

Belgium's Benny Van Steelant took the lead after 1km in the first 10km run and using two steady runs and the fastest cycle split built up a winning lead to finish the race in a new course record of 2.36.23, 1 1/2 minutes ahead of Britains Andy Peace.

Peace, second at last year's event, produced the fastest second run with a time of 33.43 and looked strong but realistically Van Steelant was not seriously pressured during the second 3 lap run and looked as if he could have gone quicker if threatened.

Nicholas Le Brun from France defending his Powerman Guernsey title finished in third place in 2.38.40. Daniel Keller finishing the first run in 8th place produced the second fastest cycle of the day to enter the transition in second place at the end of the cycle, Keller had slipped back to 5th as the stronger runners including Huub Maas clawed back the time they had lost to Keller on the run.

The quality of the field was illustrated by Julian Jenkinson who finished in 11th place in a time of 2.46.02, last year he was 4th in a time of 2.46.14.

Fiona Lothian from Scotland was in Guernsey looking for her third consecutive win. Her main competition was always going to come from Edwige Pitel from France who had been second in the 1998 World Championships. Fiona led by 13 seconds after the first run and increased the lead to 53 seconds after the cycle. It was on the start of the third and final lap of the last 10 km that Edwige passed Fiona, a move that proved to be decisive with Edwige finishing in 26th place, 1 minute 6 seconds ahead of Fiona.
