For the fourth year in succession the championships were hosted by the Bruce Triathlon Club at Lochore Meadows Country Park Fife. The 750 metre swim in Lochore was followed by a 22 kilometre bike and a five kilometre run inside the park.
The weather was calm and clear but cool with the odd drizzly shower passing through. With the water temperature struggling to reach 14 degrees C and a low air temperature it was not high summer! In the event one competitor succumbed to the cold of the swim and was taken off the bike course to hospital suffering from mild exposure!
In an exciting event the form book proved highly accurate and all pre race favourites kept to the script.
In the mens senior event local Bruce Tri Club's Paul Gallagher lead out of the swim in a time of 10:17 twenty seconds ahead of Steve Clark. However East Fife Tri Club's premier athlete swept all aside on the bike to record the second fastest bike split to come in to the second transition three minutes clear of Paul and two clear of leading chaser Kevin Clark from Ayr. Steve maintained his superiority on the run to gain his first Scottish Championships after two years of being runner up. A good transition and run saw Paul Gallacher pass Kevin Clark, Adrian Pottinger and David Holmes to gain second position.
Fifth placed Ian Diack of Fleet Feet Triathletes, 1996 champion, held off the challenge from Dumfriess's David Holmes who recorded the fastest overall bike time, to come in behind Aberdeen's Adrian Pottinger
In the junior men the local Bruce Tri Club athlete Stuart Ashley overcome a poor swim, drafting penalties on the bike and a nasty fall on the run to come home seventh overall and a minute in front of the talented Elgin athlete Fraser Cartmell in his first year as a junior. In the juvenile mens event visitting New Zealander Hamish Pepper came nineteenth overall.
In the female race Tri Inc UK's Karen Gordon had sufficient superiority on the swim and bike to hold off East Fife duathele Fiona Lothian who, rejoining triathlon competition after focussing solely on duathlons, could not claw back the deficit despite an excellent 17:39 run time.
In the mens veteran event Lomond Tri Club's Frank McShane had an excellent race to come home in ninth overall position. In the super veterans Aberdeen's Kings Tri Club Stephen Walton held off local fast cycling Bruce member Mike Joiner to come home a minute clear
