The East Midlands Series again returned after the first trial bigger and better with 10 quality events ranging from pool based sprints and open water (sprint and olympic distance).
The competition went all the way to the wire on the last event of the series at Derby when Carl Phillips (TFN) managed to win the event and the series. Phillips has had a good season, winning two of the series events and also picking up a gold medal in his age-group at the European Triathlon Championships. He beat Steve Paine (Derby Tri) into 2nd and James Endicott (NUTS) into 3rd position and helped secure the club prize to TFN for the 2nd year running by the smallest of margins over Derby Tri. Leicester Tri managed to hang on for 3rd position.
In the ladies series Chris Mawer (Leicester Tri) managed to retain her series title from last year picking up the vets prize in the process beating Marie Dawson (Lincoln Tri) and Lisa Reddish (TFN).
The vets male winner was another repeat victory with Chris Mellor (High Peak Tri) just beating Jez Smedley (TFN) and the junior prize went to Tom Curtis (Derby Tri).
Derby Tri dominated both the championship events with Tony Caulton and James Cresswell winning Ashbourne Duathlon and Market Bosworth whilst Christine Bailey (Loughborough Students) and Lesley Cliff took the female titles.
The standard and field size of events in the region has taken a massive step forward over recent years and, if this is anything to go by, 2004 is set to be bigger and better than before.
